ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Chesapeake, Virginia


Job Details

  • Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 3x12 hour shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours
  • Patient Populations:
    • Neurosurgical and post-stroke
    • Respiratory failure
    • Renal failure
    • Post-surgical
    • Trauma
    • Sepsis and MODS
    • Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization

Job Description

  • Strong neuro experience required: post-neurosurgical care, EVD management, stroke care
  • Skills needed: ventilator management, IV drip titration, telemetry monitoring, conscious sedation, dysrhythmia and emergency management
  • Patient ratios: 1 nurse to 2-3 patients
  • Float requirements: Must be willing to float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to ED or MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held
  • Overtime: OT billed after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts; 48-hour contract available with OT after 48 hours (indicate candidate preference)
  • Must be EPIC proficient (no exceptions)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start, updated annually (PAPR not allowed)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; if history of positive TB, must provide chest x-ray and TB questionnaire
  • Required immunizations or titers within 10 years:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination)
    • Varicella (declination allowed except for Mother Baby or infant/peds units)
  • Tdap vaccine required for specific units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER) with no exemptions accepted
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved medical/religious exemption with mask requirement)
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start

Documentation and Compliance

  • Proof of 2 professional references required
  • Completed employment application/resume required
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required, updated annually
  • Primary source verification of state license required
  • Photo for badge: passport-style, shoulders up, front-facing, plain background (must meet facility standards)
  • Background checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and for every contract renewal
  • Fingerprinting:
    • Required for all candidates starting 1/1/2026 (Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check)
    • Must complete fingerprint appointment promptly to avoid delays
    • Results sent directly to facility; candidates in Women’s Services, Home Health, Behavioral Health require fully cleared results before start
  • Various facility-specific forms and acknowledgements required within specified timeframes (e.g., Pyxis Acknowledgment, Job Description, TB Questionnaire, Vehicle Registration, Flu and Latex Allergy Forms)

Additional Notes

  • Local candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will not be accepted
  • Must be willing to float to other units as needed
  • Strong neuro ICU experience is critical for this role
  • Facility enforces strict compliance with all credentialing, background, and health requirements
