Registered Nurse (LDRP) - Bismarck, North Dakota

Job Details

  • Specialty: LDRP RN (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 40 hours per week
  • Schedule: Rotational shifts (7a-7p, 7p-7a), schedule made 6 weeks in advance with block scheduling; weekend every third weekend; holiday as needed
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of 12 hours on the unit

Unit Overview

  • 7 Labor & Delivery beds
  • 12 Postpartum beds, 8 Surgical beds
  • 1 dedicated C-Section OR, 2 GYN surgical OR suites
  • 3-bay triage area (average 17 patients/month)
  • Approximately 643 births annually
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines:
    • L&D: 1:1-2
    • Postpartum: 1:2-3 couplets
    • Surgical/medical postpartum: 1:3-4

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Obstetric patients including antepartum, triage, postpartum
  • High-risk pregnancy conditions such as:
    • Magnesium sulfate therapy
    • Pre-eclampsia
    • Gestational hypertension and diabetes
  • Accept patients 23+ weeks gestation
  • Postpartum vaginal and C-section deliveries
  • Surgical cases including hysterectomy, bladder repairs, mastectomies
  • No routine cardiac interventions; occasional higher-risk patients accepted

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Must be able to titrate drips (pitocin, magnesium sulfate, occasional insulin)
  • Administer common medications such as procardia, labetalol push, TXA (hemorrhage), methergine, hemabate, cytotec, cervidil
  • RNs expected to scrub for surgeries; preference for those able to scrub
  • Charge nurse present each shift and takes patient assignments; travelers will not be charge nurse
  • RNs may assist with APGAR scoring during deliveries
  • RNs expected to place telemetry patches correctly and read telemetry strips in Phase 1 recovery for C-section patients
  • Supplemental oxygen troubleshooting as needed
  • Occasional float to pediatrics, NICU feeder-growers, med/surg, PCU, ICU, ED, or psych units as sitter or helping hands

Team & Support

  • OB and Neonatologist on call 24/7; Neonatal Nurse Practitioner overnight
  • Anesthesia available in-house 24/7
  • OB scrub tech scheduled weekdays, unit clerk and occasional nurse techs (students) available
  • Remote telemetry capable unit with monitor tech support for tele patients

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Dakota
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum)
  • Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
  • Certifications required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
    • STABLE certification
  • Ability to titrate IV drips
  • Must be comfortable with first-time travel assignments and able to quickly adapt

  • Surgical scrubs provided
  • High patient satisfaction in the department
  • No call or standby requirement; optional overtime available
  • Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed part-time, full-time, or PRN with certain affiliated health systems
  • Return to orientation (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved after submission
