Description
Registered Nurse (ICU) - Night Shift
Location: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (18:30 - 07:00)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend
Holiday Requirement: July 4th
Scheduling: No self-scheduling or guaranteed block scheduling; traveler needed for high-need shifts
Floating: May float to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) if not needed in ICU
Unit Details
- ICU with 16 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1
- No nurse aides or patient care technicians on the unit
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7
- Intensivists in-house during day, available via telemedicine at night
- Respiratory Therapist shared with ER, not in ICU 24/7; RT handles vent adjustments
- Centralized telemonitor techs (not in-house) read monitors; nurses must be able to read and verify cardiac strips
- Tele monitors brand: Draeger
- Scrub color/dress code: Navy blue scrubs
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Medical ICU patients including sepsis, respiratory failure, stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), STEMI, atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response (A-fib RVR), COVID-19, COPD exacerbations, pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Occasionally stabilize patients for transfer due to limited GI coverage
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Iowa
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience within the last year
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within the past year at any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity
- Valid driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Orientation: 1 shift ICU-specific + 1 shift PCU-specific orientation required upfront; no additional orientation time approved

- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- No call or standby requirements
