Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Night PCU
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Beds: 40 beds, average daily census ~24
- Patient types: Adults with cardiac medical/surgical needs, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post-stent, post-pacemaker placement, renal failure
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5 (days and nights)
- Nurse aide/patient care tech ratio: 1:12
- Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nebraska
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
- Competent in Arterial Lines
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 1 day
- Pass/fail exam during orientation (open book, 90% required to pass)
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Shifts: 0630-1830 or 1830-0630 (nights)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Minimum 2 holidays during contract
- On-call: If called back, must arrive within 30 minutes
- Blocked scheduling generally not approved except for weekends only
- No duo placements or shared care schedules allowed
Work Environment & Policies
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
- Artificial nails prohibited; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- Overhead lifts in half the rooms, plus portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanners available
- Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, communication, and medication safety
- Diverse patient population primarily Hispanic and Somalian
- Teamwork, flexibility, adaptability, and good communication skills are essential for success
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes high flow; RNs troubleshoot as needed
- Telemetry/monitor techs present, but RNs must interpret their own strips
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved
This position is ideal for an experienced PCU RN who is adaptable, team-oriented, and comfortable managing complex cardiac and medical patients on night shifts.
