Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU
Location
- City: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Department: ICU
- Number of Beds: 33 beds (average daily census: 16)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress
Shift Information
- Shift Times: 06:30-18:30 and 18:30-06:30 (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
- Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers; block scheduling generally not approved except possibly weekends only
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days or less for the 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
- RNs must read, interpret, and document telemetry strips (monitor brand: GE) with tele tech oversight
- Respiratory equipment involvement: from nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory equipment beyond this
- Floating: Typically to Progressive Care Unit (PCU), occasionally MedSurg with typical patient ratios (1:4 or 1:5)
Staffing Support
- Nurse Aides available based on census; may assist with 1:1 patient care or floor support
- Healthcare Support Tech present 3 days per week (Monday-Friday, 08:00-16:30)
Required Certifications and Qualifications
- Current RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a pass/fail RN exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%; open book with resources provided
Policies and Additional Information
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific health system (not named here)
- If placed on call and called back in, must arrive within 30 minutes
- Block scheduling and duo scheduling requests generally not approved unless weekends only
