Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- Department: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Unit Size: 28 beds
- Patient Population: Adults, mixed medical/surgical, including cardiac and stroke patients, often admitted through the ER
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Ratio: 1:14
- Common Diagnoses: Cardiac, stroke, medical/surgical conditions
- Specialty Equipment: Code carts, LUCAS machines, hoyer lift, sit and stand devices
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs present; RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry
Job Responsibilities
- Titrate drips including heparin, octreotide, insulin, and maintenance IV medications (non-titratable)
- Float to Med/Surg, ICU, and ED as needed based on abilities and patient care requirements
- Participate in weekend and holiday rotations (every other weekend; holidays rotate with permanent staff)
- Collaborate with team members in a high-flow unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Follow dress code: Navy blue scrubs
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 1 week classroom training plus 2 twelve-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
- Scheduling: 6-week rotation schedule managed by unit schedulers
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Rotates with permanent staff
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, based on skills learned)
- Adherence to fingernail policy: Artificial nails are prohibited; refusal to comply results in contract termination
Additional Information
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain healthcare systems
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals after submission
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- Unit secretary available 2-3 days per week; stocking clerk available 3 days per week
