Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery

Location: Redwood City, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7 PM – 7 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts, every other weekend required)

Job Overview

Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery RN for a travel assignment. The role involves working in a hospital setting with a focus on labor, delivery, and postpartum care. The nurse will function as a charge nurse at times, triaging patients and floating to postpartum in rotation with permanent staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage patient care in Labor & Delivery, including triage and charge nurse duties.
• Work with OB techs who assist as nurse aides when no active cases.
• Float to postpartum unit as needed.
• Participate in weekend and holiday rotations (every other weekend and rotating holidays).
• Utilize Cerner PowerChart Maternity and Cerner Fetal Monitoring systems for electronic medical records and fetal heart monitoring.
• Collaborate with anesthesia (available 24/7, usually in-house during active labor), private OB/GYN physicians (after hours/weekends), and a Level 2 NICU staffed by specialized nurses.
• Support patient population with higher socioeconomic status and diverse language needs, including Mandarin speakers.

Patient Population & Environment

• Care for patients with typical ratios of 1:3 or 1:4 couplets per ACOG and California guidelines.
• Level 2 NICU on site for infants 32 weeks and above; Stanford NICU nurses attend deliveries.
• LDRP rooms are new; postpartum rooms are older.
• Infant security system uses “hugs and kisses” technology (not a locked unit).
• Lactation nurses available during the day to develop lactation care plans.
• Higher maternal median age (~37 years).

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience.
• Active California RN license.
• Current certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Advanced AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) certification.

Additional Information

• Orientation includes 3 shifts on unit (2 L&D, 1 Mother-Baby).
• No IV team support; RT (Respiratory Therapy) available 24/7.
• Pharmacy available 7 AM to 10:30 PM, then satellite pharmacy.
• Optional on-call availability during low census periods; if on call, must be within 20 minutes of hospital. Sleep room available onsite.
• Scrub color: Ceil blue provided by hospital.
