Registered Nurse (ER RN) - Phoenix, Arizona


Job Overview

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Phoenix, AZ
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum
  • Unit: Emergency Department / Trauma
  • Patient Volume: ~250-300 patients per day, ~88,000 patients per year
  • Unit Size: Acute beds - 36, Subacute beds - 54, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (unit discretion)
  • Orientation: 2-3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
  • Floating: Float within the ER and between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes (main campus, Westgate, and 2 freestanding ERs)
  • Telemetry: Use Phillips monitors; must be able to read cardiac strips
  • Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapists manage vents
  • Hospital Support: 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy (Pharmacist in ER 10 hrs/day), hospitalists/intensivists and midlevels on site
  • Charge Nurses: 2 charge RNs with light or task load
  • Nurse Aides: 4 Patient Care Technicians for sitter duties
  • Scrub Color: Navy

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience, including Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience
  • At least 6 months of Trauma Level 1 experience specifically required
  • Previous travel experience required for Emergency Department and Neuro ICU roles
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS (ENPC does NOT substitute for PALS)
  • Cerner EMR experience required for Emergency Department
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam: Must pass 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation (study guide provided)
  • Must complete SIMs Lab competency for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions apply for some units)
  • Must be competent in sterile field maintenance
  • Must have own vehicle for travel teams
  • Must comply with appearance standards: no facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Must not hold another contract simultaneously with this employer
  • Must have been off permanent staff with this employer for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment

Additional Information

  • Float policy allows mid-shift float between 4 facilities within a 50-mile radius
  • Facility is a teaching hospital; travelers may be expected to work with nursing students
  • Common patient diagnoses: trauma, burns; pediatric patients are typically transferred out
  • Psych holds: 30-40 patients
  • Typical shift schedule includes 12-hour nights with 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period; holiday coverage based on unit needs
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle service; night shift assigned to parking garage

Important Notes

  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Candidates must submit complete onboarding documentation by the Wednesday before start date or risk delay
  • Candidates must pass a pre-screen and clinical approval process before offer
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam failure results in 6-month disqualification within the region
  • SIMs Lab is pass/fail; failure may result in termination
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • No contract shorter than 13 weeks will be considered
