Registered Nurse (ER) - Texas

Job Overview

• Position: Registered Nurse in Emergency Room (ER)
• Location: College Station, Texas
• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts
• Contract Length: 12 weeks
• Start Date: ASAP
• Average ER patient volume: ~70 patients per day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity
• Trauma Level: Level III Trauma Center
• STEMI and Stroke Receiving Center

Unit Details

• ER beds: 18 total, including 4 critical rooms for trauma or codes
• Fast Track area: Yes, with 6 beds
• Separate triage area: Yes; travelers are allowed to staff triage
• ER holds: Intermixed within ER, nurses care for holds
• Psych/seclusion rooms: 1
• Security: In-house 24/7, rounds in ER
• Respiratory Therapy (RT): Available 24/7; RTs perform ABGs, breathing treatments, ventilator management; RNs troubleshoot vents and respiratory equipment
• Monitor Techs: None; RNs read and interpret cardiac monitor strips
• Imaging: X-Ray and CT located nearby; nurses assist with transport
• Phlebotomy: Dedicated phlebotomy staff draws labs, not RNs
• Support staff: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift, occasionally pulled to sitter duties

Patient Population and Common Diagnoses

• Pediatrics (transferred if critically ill)
• Cardiac cases including STEMIs
• Stroke patients
• Some trauma (multisystem trauma transferred out)
• General ER cases: abdominal pain, respiratory, gastrointestinal, etc.

Required Certifications and Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Texas
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Orientation and Scheduling

• Orientation: 1-3 shifts with preceptor and checkoff packet, depending on experience
• Scheduling: 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM/PM; midshifts available at 9, 11, 1, and 3
• Scheduling system: Matrix scheduling with attempts to accommodate traveler preferences
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday coverage: Coordinated with permanent staff rotation
• Call/standby: None
• Floating: Rare; travelers are first to float and serve as support if needed

Additional Information

• Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with a certain large health system within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
• Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
• Psych patient placement is handled by designated staff; RNs are not responsible for placement setup
• Dress code: Navy scrubs and undershirts required; scrub jackets optional but must be navy
• Traveler extensions are preferred
