RN - MS Tele Nurse Shift Manager
Location: Bakersfield, California
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week
Role Summary
This position combines charge nurse, clinical mentor, and manager responsibilities. The clinician provides on-shift leadership to ensure safe, high-quality, and compassionate patient care while supporting staff and promoting a positive work environment. Responsibilities include rounding on patients, addressing service or safety concerns, serving as a resource for clinical and interpersonal issues, and taking charge nurse assignments as needed based on census and staffing.
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: All Medsurg Telemetry units
- Patient types: General medical-surgical, gynecology, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, some spine and joint cases
- Oncology: 7 rooms are private oncology suites; patients may have a history of cancer but are not necessarily on active chemotherapy
- Pediatrics: Patients over age 15 accepted
- No acute strokes, acute cardiac cases, or drips
- No ventilated patients
Orientation & Training
- 3 weeks total orientation:
- 1 week classroom
- 2 weeks unit orientation
- Floor-specific orientation includes 1 Cerner shift if needed and 2 shifts on units
Staffing & Ratios
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:5 for med-surg patients
- 1:4 for chemo/telemetry patients
- Nurse aides: Target 2 per shift
- Floating: May float to other med-surg/telemetry units within the system
Certifications & Experience Requirements
- Required certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Must have Medsurg Telemetry experience
- Must have been a charge RN in the last assignment
- No first-time travelers accepted
- Strong central line experience required
- Must enjoy teaching and spending time with patients
Work Environment & Additional Details
- EMR system: Cerner
- Weekend requirement: One weekend shift every two weeks
- Holidays: 2 major holidays and 1 minor holiday required
- Scrub color: Navy
- Telemetry monitoring: Remote telemetry with monitor techs
- Respiratory therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- No ventilated patients on unit
- No IV team; resource nurse available for assistance; PICC and midline teams available
- Hospitalists on-site 24/7
- Call: No regular call; if placed on standby due to low census, must report within 30 minutes
- Nights, every other weekend schedule, first to float
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 3 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- One completed travel nursing assignment
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
- Experience in charge nurse roles
- Strong central line experience
