Registered Nurse (ICU) - Nebraska, Omaha
Job Details
- Specialty: ICU Med Surg RN
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours guaranteed per week
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit: Medical Surgical ICU (34 beds)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
- PCU: 1:4 to 1:5
- Med Surg: 1:5 to 1:6
Patient Population & Care
- Adults and pediatric patients over 15 years old
- Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure, general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, internal chemo administration)
- Neuro surgery patients involved in thrombectomy program (experience not required)
- Use of advanced monitoring and equipment: CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring, Zoll Thermoguard, Bell Mont rapid transfuser
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot vents but do not manage advanced respiratory therapies
- No telemetry/monitor techs on unit; RNs must read and interpret Draeger heart monitoring strips
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- RN must pass a 90% score on an open book skills exam during orientation (resources provided)
- Training available for advanced monitoring and equipment use in real time
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts: 0630-1830 and 1830-0630 (night shift for this role)
- Scheduling determined by manager based on unit needs
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday, based on unit needs
- Floating required to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
- Charge nurse present each shift and participates in rapid response teams and codes
- Patient care techs available at a ratio of 1:18
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
- Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Must not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within 50 miles
- Pass/fail exam during orientation with minimum 90% to continue employment

- Fast-paced tertiary hospital environment with fluctuating patient volume
- Successful candidates demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, willingness to ask questions, and collaboration with attendings and trainees (fellows, residents)
- Rapid turnaround time required for submission (7 days or less per 13-week contract)
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and not be employed by certain local healthcare systems
