Registered Nurse (Med Surg/PCU/Telemetry Neuro Trauma)
Location: Marshfield, Wisconsin
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 28-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a neuro trauma focus
- Common patient diagnoses: strokes, seizures, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Myasthenia gravis, spinal injuries, thrombectomies, post-TNK/TPA care, neuro specialties (endovascular, AMS, dementia), trauma orthopedic injuries (hematomas, bleeds, falls on blood thinners, farm and motor vehicle accidents)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6 (dependent on acuity)
- Nurse aides available with ratios:
- Days: 1:9
- Nights: 1:12
- Respiratory therapy equipment on unit: vents, trachs, CPAP, BiPAP, VapoTherm, EtCO2 monitors
- Central telemetry monitoring located off-unit; RNs are not required to read their own strips
- Charge nurse role:
- Nights: full patient assignment
- Days: smaller assignment
Schedule & Shifts
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Self-scheduling with manager balancing; schedule opens 6 weeks in advance
- Weekend requirement: every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Holiday requirement: typically 2 out of 3 winter holidays, otherwise every other holiday
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating required to sister Med Surg units with varied specialties (mixed care, cardiac, general, ortho, heme/onc)
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license appropriate for Wisconsin
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg, PCU, or ICU settings
- Experience must include at least 1 year within the last 12 months in a similar setting
- Must have drip titration experience (heparin, nitro, diltiazem, amiodarone, 3% saline, insulin)
- Trach and ventilator experience highly preferred, especially home trach vents
- Willingness to learn ventilator management if not already experienced
- BLS (AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
- Open to first-time travel nurses
- Must be able to titrate drips independently
Orientation & Onboarding
- Unit-specific orientation includes 1 shift of general orientation plus 1 shift with a preceptor
- Clinicians must clock in and out at the facility
- Previous employment with this facility requires a minimum 6-month gap before reapplying
Dress Code
- Any solid color scrubs
Additional Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required
- This position is night shift only with approximately 48 hours per week
- Floating to other units is expected as part of the role
