Registered Nurse (ER RN) - Nebraska, Omaha
Job Details
- Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Evening, Night
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- Setting: Level I Trauma Center with Pediatric Certification and Comprehensive Stroke Center designation
- Unit Details:
- 20 beds total (5 Trauma, 10 Observation, plus hallway beds)
- Fast Track area with 6 beds
- Separate triage area with 3 beds
- Security staffed in-house 24/7 within the ER
- Patient Acuity: Fast paced, high acuity; common cases include trauma, sepsis, chest pain, shortness of breath, strokes (TPA administration)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- 1:4 in zones
- 1:6 in Fast Track
- 1:5 in Observation
- 1:1 in ICU/Trauma
- Support Staff:
- Charge nurse on each shift
- Nurse aides/EMTs/Paramedics/Patient sitters with ratios of 1:10 in Observation and 1:20 in main ED
- Telemetry/Monitor techs present; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
- Orientation:
- 1 week of onboarding
- 2 shifts at Bergan
- 1 shift at UC
- Floating: Required to float to Observation unit and a freestanding ER at least once a week
- Scheduling: Leadership sets schedule; weekend and holiday work varies based on department needs
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred but not required
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Recent Level 1 or Level 2 trauma experience required
- Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided)
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application to verify candidate is within a 50-mile radius
- Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
Additional Requirements
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within a 50-mile radius
- Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days or less from contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
