ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Chesapeake, Virginia


Job Details

  • Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 4x12 hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 48 hours
  • Patient Populations:
    • Neurosurgical and post-stroke
    • Respiratory failure
    • Renal failure
    • Post-surgical
    • Trauma
    • Sepsis and MODS
    • Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Must have strong neuro experience including post-neurosurgical care, EVD management, and stroke care.
  • Skills required:
    • Ventilator management
    • IV drip titration
    • Telemetry monitoring
    • Conscious sedation
    • Dysrhythmia and emergency management
  • Float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to Emergency Department or MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3
  • Overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts.
  • EPIC proficiency required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license) required for address verification; no candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will be accepted.
  • Background checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually.
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals.
    • Zero tolerance for any background hits.
  • Fingerprinting required via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check process.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; annual TB testing required.
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year, updated annually; PAPR not allowed.
  • Immunizations and titers required within 10 years or documented declinations:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for certain units)
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved medical/religious exemption with mask requirement).
  • COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available.
  • Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing required at orientation (80% minimum score, one attempt only).
  • Unit-specific skills checklist and competency exams required, updated annually.
  • Photo for badge (passport style, shoulders up, plain background) required before start.
  • Proof of 2 professional references required.
  • Complete employment application/resume required.

Additional Notes

  • Must indicate candidate preference for 3x12 or 4x12 shifts; overtime applies after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule.
  • Candidates must complete facility-specific forms and acknowledgments within specified timeframes.
  • Candidates with a history of positive TB must provide additional documentation including chest x-ray.
  • Facility enforces strict local rules regarding candidate residence and documentation submission timelines.
