Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)

Location: Folsom, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Job Description

Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center setting. The unit includes Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby couplets, and a small NICU for newborn stabilization. The facility averages 70-80 births per month, including twin deliveries and preterm infants (35 weeks and above; less than 35 weeks transferred out).

Nurses will work with a team including OB physicians in-house 24/7, perinatal specialists, anesthesia on-call with 20-minute response time (in-house during epidurals), and respiratory therapists attending every delivery.

Patient Care & Unit Details

• Labor nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2, 1:1 during delivery
• Mother/Baby couplets ratio: 1:4
• Unit beds: 2 OB delivery beds, 7 LDRP beds, 4-8 overflow postpartum beds, 1 OR suite for C-sections
• NICU beds: 2 for newborn stabilization
• Common patient diagnoses: pregnancies 35 weeks and above, twin deliveries, preterm patients transferred if under 35 weeks
• Nurses are responsible for titrating drips such as Pitocin and occasionally insulin
• No CNAs on unit; one OB Tech per shift
• No Tele/Monitor Techs; nurses monitor fetal heart rhythms using GE fetal monitors and Fetalink EFM system
• If general anesthesia is used, patient recovery occurs in the main PACU

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in California
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, including LDRP (Labor Delivery Recovery & Postpartum) experience
• Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
• Required certifications:

  • BLS (AHA) issued by American Heart Association
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (Adv EFM)
  • AWHONN membership or certification
• Comfortable with Neonatal Resuscitation at delivery (no in-house pediatric coverage)
• Experience with OR circulating preferred
• Must be able to titrate drips

Additional Requirements & Information

• Candidates must provide 2 supervisory references: one within the last 12 months and one within the last 3 years
• Candidates may not have been employed by any facility associated with a specific large health system within the last 12 months
• Weekend requirement: 2 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Friday/Saturday nights, Saturday/Sunday days)
• Holiday shifts rotate with core staff
• May be placed on-call/standby during scheduled shifts with a 30-minute callback expectation
• Floating may be required to other Sacramento area facilities
• Scheduling is done 4 weeks in advance
• Charge nurse or nurse shift manager is present every shift; charge nurse may take patient assignments if needed

Work Environment

• Anesthesia is on-call except during epidurals when anesthesia remains in-house
• Respiratory therapists assist with respiratory support and equipment (ventilators, CPAP, bubble CPAP) at deliveries
• No CNAs on unit; one OB Tech per shift
• Nurses follow AWHONN guidelines for patient ratios but do not strictly adhere to them at this facility

This position is ideal for an experienced Labor and Delivery RN comfortable with high-acuity maternal and newborn care in a busy Family Birthing Center environment.
