Description

ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 9 weeks


Patient Population

  • Adults to Geriatrics

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years ICU nursing experience
  • 1st time travel nurses accepted

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Care for all potential ICU diagnoses
  • Manage high volume of ventilators and arterial lines
  • Experience with titration of continuous infusions including sedation agents, pain medications, paralytic agents, and vasopressors
  • Competency required to care for CRRT patients on Baxter PrisMax machine (agency RNs must demonstrate this competency)
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds each morning with intensivist, bedside RN, PharmD, RRT, OT/PT, dietitian, case manager, wound care
  • Transport patients (e.g., to CT) alongside tech and RRT if patient is ventilated
  • Nightshift nurse practitioners place central lines, vascular catheters, arterial lines, attend codes, manage ICU care issues, and admit patients; they are first call before intensivist

Staffing & Work Environment

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3
  • Unit uses Epic electronic health record system (required), Pyxis medication system, and SBAR communication method
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Floating: Yes, within facility and sister campus as needed and within scope of practice
  • Call: None required
  • Weekend schedule: Every other weekend
  • Holiday work: If 1 major holiday falls during assignment, expected to work it; if 2 holidays, expected to work both; if 3 holidays, expected to work 2 of them
  • Major holidays include Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day

Orientation & Compliance

  • Maximum Return to Orientation (RTO) time: 7 days
  • Full compliance with onboarding requirements is mandatory to start on time; delays in compliance push start date by 2 weeks due to bi-weekly orientation schedule
  • Number of non-billable orientation hours depends on contract length (e.g., 8 hours for 8-week assignment)

Required Documentation & Screening

  • Valid Registered Nurse license for Georgia (verified within 30 days prior to start)
  • Background check completed within 30 days prior to start, including criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others as specified
  • Education verification of related degree required; can be pending at start with proof it is in process (due within 30 days post start)
  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 12 months or chest x-ray if prior positive; TB questionnaire required annually
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or signed declination
    • Tdap (Tdap highly recommended but not required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season (Nov 1 – Mar 31)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days prior to start (including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, methadone, PCP, THC, barbiturates, propoxyphene)
  • Color blindness test required; alternative assessment available if needed
  • Competency exams required by agency for medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG (3 attempts allowed for dysrhythmia exam; failure results in cancellation)
  • Skills checklist updated within 12 months
  • Verification of most recent work history required; can be pending at start with proof it is in process (due within 30 days post start)
  • Two clinical references required

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Georgia
  • Minimum 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, with ICU experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience titrating continuous infusions of sedation agents, pain medications, paralytic agents, and vasopressors
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Notes

  • Floating may include sister campus within the same healthcare system
  • No call responsibilities
  • Locals accepted at same rate
  • Candidate must review and sign facility code of conduct and dress/professional appearance policies prior to start

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity ICU setting with a multidisciplinary team, caring for adult to geriatric patients requiring advanced critical care skills. Night shift availability and compliance with all credentialing and health requirements are essential.
