Description

Registered Nurse - PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 14 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Total Hours per Week: 36
  • Must be able to float to NICU and Pediatrics units
  • Patient Diagnoses commonly encountered:
    • Respiratory Distress / Failure
    • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
    • Seizures
    • Pain Management
  • Special Procedures:
    • Moderate Sedation
    • Drips (IV medication infusions)
    • Arterial Lines
    • Central Lines / Central Venous Pressure (CVP) monitoring

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required; temporary paper receipt allowed only as placeholder until official ID is received
  • Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; includes SS trace, counties, nationwide, sex offender, FACIS Level 3, education verification, and international searches if applicable
  • Employment verification for at least 2 workplaces within last 7 years (W2 or direct supervisor references accepted)
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet essential job functions
  • Negative TB test (PPD, GOLD, or TSPOT) or chest X-ray within 1 year; pending results allowed if confirmed completed
  • Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start; instant 9-panel can be used as placeholder
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola) – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters if negative
    • Mumps – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters if negative
    • Rubella – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters if negative
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters or proof of chickenpox history if negative
    • Hepatitis B – Titer, series, or signed declination
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • Respirator fit test will be completed onsite; fit mask documentation required for new contracts
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam required (Relias or Prophecy platform only), with up to 3 attempts allowed; remediation required after failed attempts
  • Unit-specific competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable
  • Stroke and Trauma CEUs may be required; stroke CEUs must be completed prior to or within one week of start; trauma CEUs required after 27th week of work
  • Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required
  • Signed floating policy and time & attendance policy for contracted staff

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must review and comply with hand hygiene policy
  • References: 2 professional references within 2 years of start required (may be used as backup for work history verification)
  • Employment application required prior to start
  • Education verification required; nursing education program must be approved by Maryland Board of Nursing or equivalent
  • Nursys verification required for all RNs
  • NIH Stroke Certification may be required and is valid for 1 year only
  • Candidate must complete all labs by Monday prior to start to ensure on-time start

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity pediatric intensive care setting with diverse patient diagnoses and advanced nursing procedures. It is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are comfortable floating to NICU and Pediatrics units and meeting rigorous compliance and certification standards.
