ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Chesapeake, Virginia
Job Details
- Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3x12 hour shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours

- Neurosurgical and post-stroke
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Post-surgical
- Trauma
- Sepsis and MODS
- Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization
Job Description & Responsibilities
- Strong neuro experience required: post-neurosurgical care, EVD management, stroke care
- Care for ICU patients, including ventilator management, IV drip titration, telemetry monitoring, conscious sedation, dysrhythmia, and emergency management
- Float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to Emergency Department or MedSurg units
- Patient-to-nurse ratios typically 1:2-3
- Overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 schedules
- Must be EPIC electronic health record proficient
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Skills Required
- Neuro ICU skills: post-neurosurgical care, external ventricular drain (EVD) management, stroke care
- Ventilator management
- IV drip titration
- Telemetry monitoring
- Conscious sedation
- Dysrhythmia and emergency management
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license) required for address verification; no candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will be accepted
- Background checks: 7-year criminal history check within 1 year of start, updated annually; includes SS trace, counties, nationwide, sex offender, FACIS level 3; zero tolerance for any hits
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Primary source verification of state license required
- Pass/fail EKG competency testing at orientation (minimum 80% to pass; one attempt only)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for telemetry nurses
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required
- Job description form specific to unit/profession required
- References: proof of 2 references required
- Employment application/resume required
- Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually
- Performance evaluation required if worked with facility for 1 year or more
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start, updated annually (PAPR not allowed)
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; if history of positive TB, must provide chest x-ray and TB questionnaire
- Immunizations/titers required within 10 years or documented declination for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella (declination allowed except for Mother Baby or infant/peds units)
- Tdap vaccine required (within 10 years) for certain units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER); no exemptions accepted for these units
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually by October 31 (medical/religious exemptions allowed with mask requirement)
- COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
Additional Notes
- Must submit a passport-style photo (shoulders up, front-facing, plain background) before start
- Fingerprinting required via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check; must sign National Criminal Record Request Form within 72 hours of contract signing
- Candidate information grid and Pyxis acknowledgment forms must be completed within 48 hours of signing
- Local candidates residing less than 50 miles from the facility are not eligible
- Overtime available after 48 hours on 4x12 schedules; candidate preference for OT must be indicated
