Registered Nurse (Med Telemetry)
Location: Iron Mountain, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Overview
- 24 inpatient beds with up to 10 observation/day surgeries.
- Patient ratios: 5:1 day shift, 6:1 night shift.
- Team nursing model with LPNs (2 LPNs to 7 RNs).
- Common diagnoses: nursing home patients, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU issues, pacemaker patients, sepsis, orthopedic surgeries (hips and knees), cholecystectomy, appendectomy, TURPS-CBI.
- Small pediatric population (3/year) generally not assigned to travelers unless prior experience or no other options.
- Limited onsite resources: no IV team; RNs must be comfortable with IV starts.
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7; RT oversees entire hospital.
- Hospitalist or Intensivist coverage until 6 PM daily; telemedicine used after hours.
- Telemetry monitoring done in ICU daily; basic arrhythmia knowledge required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Medical/Surgical or Med Telemetry nursing (acute care experience).
- Preferred experience with TURPS-CBI procedures.
- Preferred experience in Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 settings.
- Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
- Must be comfortable with IV starts and managing limited onsite resources.
- Ability to float to like units and patient populations is mandatory.
Job Responsibilities & Expectations
- Charge nurse role includes taking patient assignments; travelers may serve as relief charge nurse.
- Work with nurse aides on the unit.
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips.
- Weekend rotation every other week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).
- Holiday coverage required for approximately 2 out of 3 holidays.
- Potential call or standby responsibilities.
- Unit-specific orientation includes a full computer education day, shadowing, and supervised shifts before working independently.
- Professional dress code with solid colors; no specific scrub color required.
- All clinicians must clock in and out at the facility.
Additional Notes
- Prior work history with the facility must have an end date at least 6 months before submission.
- Scheduling attempts to accommodate self-scheduling and longer blocks of shifts when possible, but blocking is not guaranteed.
