Description
Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry Unit
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: 3x12 hour rotation (Day 7:00 AM–7:00 PM / Night 7:00 PM–7:00 AM)
Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend
Floating: Required
Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 75 miles away
Unit & Patient Population
- High volume Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit
- Patient ratio experience required: 1:6 (must be able to manage 1:5 to 1:7 ratio)
- Complex care unit including medicine, orthopedic overflow, and complex long-term patients
- Telemetry monitoring and use of rapid response/code teams
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience managing patient ratios as specified
- Charge nurse experience required
- EPIC charting experience required
- Clinical skills including:
- Pacemaker (temporary and permanent) care
- Feeding tube management
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
- Phlebotomy and IV starts
- Heparin protocols
- Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
- Surgical drains
- Respiratory support: High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
- Tracheostomy management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care including Wound Vac
Required Licenses & Certifications
- New York RN license in hand – no exceptions
- BLS (AHA Provider/Instructor/RQI acceptable)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (valid and current)
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM as required by unit (AHA accepted)
- State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
- Fit mask (N95) certification within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire accepted in lieu of annual renewal
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Snellen eye exam within 1 year (not required annually)
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Background & Verification
- 7-year criminal background check within 3 months of start (including felony, SSN trace, national sex offender, education verification)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, run monthly
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation if applicable
- Education verification from primary source required (not hard copies)
- Employment verification of at least 2 past employments
- References (2 within 3 years) required for certain candidates
- New York state-specific checks including sex offender registry and Medicaid exclusion list
Additional Information
- Must provide government-issued photo ID
- Candidates must complete health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing
- Scrub color: navy bottoms, navy or white tops
- Floating to other units as needed
- First-time travelers accepted if patient ratio experience requirement is met
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- Experience managing patient ratios of 1:6 (able to manage 1:5 to 1:7)
- Charge nurse experience
- Floating to other units as needed
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification, valid and current
- Experience with EPIC charting system
- Clinical skills including:
- Pacemaker (temporary and permanent) management
- Feeding tube care and management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Heparin protocols
- Ortho trauma care
- Total joint replacements care
- Respiratory support including High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) and portable oxygen tanks
- Tracheostomy management
