Registered Nurse (ICU) - Chandler, Arizona
Job Overview
- Position requires 3 full years of recent ICU experience to be considered (no exceptions).
- Experience must include either neuro or cardiovascular (CV) ICU exposure.
- Night shift position with 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week.
- Typically requires working 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Friday-Saturday nights or Saturday-Sunday days).
- Self-scheduling is allowed but may be balanced by management based on unit needs.
- No additional call or standby shifts required, though low census may occur up to 3 times per contract.
- Flexibility and willingness to float between multiple ICU units (Surgical ICU, Medical Cardiac ICU, Overflow ICU) and to telemetry units as needed.
Unit Details
- Units include:
- Surgical ICU (Trauma Neuro Surgery) – 32 beds, nurse:patient ratio 1:1 or 1:2.
- Medical ICU – Medical Cardiac + Overflow (36 + 12 beds), nurse:patient ratio 1:1 or 1:2.
- Level 1 trauma center with patients including trauma (falls, gunshot wounds, blunt trauma, MVAs), neuro-surgery, CVA, sepsis, ARDS, COVID, vascular surgeries, and advanced cardiac support (ECMO, IABP, Impella, Tandem heart).
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, rocuronium, levophed, vasopressin, cardene, labetalol, dopamine, dobutamine, heparin, and insulin.
- Charge nurse duties included; charge nurses do not take patients.
- No nurse aides on the unit except for sitters and Health Unit Secretary support.
- Hospitalists or intensivists are in-house 24/7.
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7 with equipment including Dreager, Hamilton, Puritan Bennett 840 ventilators, V60s BiPAP, and Airvo.
- No telemetry/monitor techs on unit; RNs must interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors.
Required Certifications & Exams
- Active Arizona RN license or compact license.
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred.
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (maximum 2 attempts).
- Pass/fail simulation lab on Day 1 of orientation (study guides provided).
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation lasts 1-2 days.
- Skills validation for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices as needed.
Additional Information
- Scrub color: Navy.
- Floating expectations include telemetry units with nurse:patient ratios of 1:3 or 1:4.
- Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within the past year at any facility within a 50-mile radius associated with certain health systems.
- First-time travelers are welcome if they meet the ICU experience requirement.
- Prior travel experience is not required.
