Registered Nurse - MICU (Charlottesville, Virginia)

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Care for MICU patients primarily with multi-system failure and co-morbid conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, GI bleed, and organ failure.
  • Unit recently expanded to a 28-bed ICU across two units (16 beds on MICU3 and 12 beds on MICU4).
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients.
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM to 7:30 PM).
  • Schedule includes every other weekend and every other holiday.
  • Time off: 40 hours can be approved; no back-to-back weekends off; no time off around Labor Day.
  • Must adhere to facility float policy.
  • Epic electronic health record experience required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia (VA license pending submissions accepted).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience in a Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days.
  • Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN accepted if BSN not held. Official transcripts acceptable; photocopies of diplomas are not.
  • Fingerprinting via Virginia State Police required for certain units (candidate will be notified if applicable).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required only for Behavioral Health or specific units.
  • Proof of 2 clinical references required.

Certifications

  • BLS and ACLS required (AHA or ARC accepted).
  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions.
  • Additional certifications such as PALS, NRP, TNCC, Chemotherapy, NIH Stroke, and others may be required depending on unit assignment but are not specified for this MICU role.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start attesting ability to meet physical demands.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with 2-step PPD within 1 year and 90 days of start; Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted.
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted for measles.
  • Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, additional antigen titer required.
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but will not hold clearance.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions).
  • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually.

Additional Requirements

  • Candidate must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service.
  • Must complete facility-specific forms including professional appearance guidelines, release authorization, TB screening, traveler compliance, and fit testing acknowledgment if applicable.
  • Pass/fail testing acknowledgment and medication/pharmacology competency exams required as applicable.
  • References, employment application, and skills checklist must be completed and updated as required.

Notes

  • Radiation badges are no longer provided by the agency for new candidates; new hires must obtain badges from the facility if needed.
