Registered Nurse – MICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work with a MICU patient population primarily experiencing multi-system failure and co-morbid conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, GI bleed, and organ failure.
- Unit consists of a 28-bed ICU split across two units (16 beds on MICU3 and 12 beds on MICU4).
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Schedule includes every other weekend and every other holiday off.
- Time off restrictions: unable to approve time off around Labor Day or back-to-back weekends off; can approve up to 40 hours for time off.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia (VA license pending submissions accepted).
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS and ACLS required.
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation (basic rhythm interpretation with a minimum passing score).
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days.
- Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN minimum if BSN not held. Official transcripts acceptable; photocopies of diplomas are not.
- Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug test including marijuana and fentanyl, required within 2 months of start and updated annually.
- References: proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required.
- Performance evaluations and skills checklists must be current if previously employed with the agency.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed).
- Negative TB screening: 2-step PPD within 1 year and 90 days of start or Qgold within 12 months (Tspot not accepted). Chest X-ray required if positive.
- Annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles) – 2 vaccines or positive titer, no declinations allowed.
- Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive titer; declination accepted but not clearance-holding.
- Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer; declination accepted but not clearance-holding.
- Hepatitis B – Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, Hep B Antigen titer required within 6 months of start. Declinations not accepted.
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or titer required; declination required if titer negative.
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions or declinations accepted).
Facility Specific Requirements
- Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged.
- Completion of facility-specific screening, release authorization, and traveler compliance forms prior to start.
- Fit testing for patient-facing clinical roles will be completed onsite if required.
- Latex allergy questionnaire required if applicable.
- Fingerprinting required for certain behavioral health assignments; must be completed prior to start.
Additional Information
- Orientation includes pass/fail testing on cardiac rhythms and medication knowledge.
- Candidates must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service.
- Time off and scheduling restrictions apply; no back-to-back weekends off and limited approval around holidays.
