Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg Swing Bed (Night Shift)

Location: Schuyler, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (3 shifts per week)

Job Description

• Acute CAH (Critical Access Hospital) RN experience required for a med-surg swing bed position.
• Work in a small hospital with a friendly Midwest community atmosphere.
• Swing bed unit with approximately 10 beds.
• Patient population includes adults, geriatrics, and occasional pediatrics.
• Common diagnoses: diabetic care, pancreatitis, pneumonia, IV antibiotics, therapy, wound care.
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:3-4.
• Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments.
• Patient care techs/nurse aides available at a ratio of 1:8.
• Floating to Emergency Department may be required as backup during high volume.
• Self-scheduling allowed with manager approval.
• Weekend requirement: at least every 3rd weekend, sometimes every other.
• Holiday rotation per unit needs.
• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs (scrubs provided).
• Orientation: 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation.
• Teamwork and willingness to assist wherever needed are highly valued.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
• Minimum of 2 years Med Surg nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• Current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification
• Valid driver’s license

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, based on skills learned).
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination.
• Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within a 50-mile radius.
• Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed.
• Strong teamwork culture with a family feel among unit and ancillary departments.

Summary

This is a 13-week night shift RN travel assignment in a small critical access hospital swing bed unit in Nebraska. The role requires acute med-surg CAH experience, multiple certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS), and a commitment to teamwork in a close-knit environment. Candidates must be local within 50 miles and meet strict orientation and conduct standards.
