Description

Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Maryville, Tennessee
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Float required; may be assigned to other units based on need and skill set
  • Staffing ratio at night: 1 nurse to 6 patients
  • Patient age group: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Patient diagnoses commonly seen: Stroke/TIA, Seizure, Syncope, Pneumonia, Chest Pain, Dialysis, Acute Kidney Failure, Post Heart Catheterization, Respiratory Failure, Encephalopathy, Congestive Heart Failure, Sepsis
  • Unit specializes in inpatient stroke and TIA care, also manages higher acuity medical-surgical patients
  • Special procedures include peritoneal dialysis and continuous bladder irrigation
  • Medication system used: Omnicell

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Tennessee
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience within the last year
  • One completed travel nursing assignment
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Certifications required:
    • ACLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
    • BLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Orientation & Training

  • Completion of online modules within 72 hours of assignment (approximately 12 hours) is mandatory before starting
  • 16 hours of non-billable orientation onsite, separate from online modules
  • Pass/fail testing on medication and EKG/arrhythmia required prior to orientation (two attempts allowed, 84% passing score)
  • Floating policy acknowledgment required (not applicable for non-clinical roles)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Driver’s license required immediately upon signing for computer access and must be carried on duty
  • Background check: 7-year history within 12 months of start, including alias and multi-state searches
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
  • Physical exam within 1 year verifying ability to meet physical demands
  • Drug screening within 1 year, updated annually (5-panel minimum)
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Negative TB test (True 2-step PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or Tspot within 90 days)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years (if working/floating in high-risk areas)
    • Flu vaccine or approved exemption required annually (not required for 100% remote workers)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; second vaccine can be pending if collected within 28 days of first
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
  • Annual competency exams and training (Core Parts I, II, III) including OSHA, patient safety, and ethical care
  • HIPAA training and orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually
  • Badge photo required prior to start (passport-style, plain background, no alterations)

Additional Notes

  • Respirator fit testing (N95) completed onsite during orientation
  • Floating policy applies; may be assigned to different units based on staffing needs
  • Medication and arrhythmia competency exams are time-sensitive and must be completed before orientation
  • Candidates must have prior travel experience; no first-time travelers accepted

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized inpatient stroke/TIA unit with a focus on high-acuity adult and geriatric patients, requiring strong clinical skills, flexibility to float, and prior travel nursing experience.
