Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 36 hours per week (12-hour shifts)
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
- Number of beds: 27-28
- Patient population: Adult patients
- Common diagnoses: Oncology and trauma patients
- Patient care focus: Oncology patients from diagnosis through remission or end-of-life care
- Float assignments: Med/Surg and PCU units at the same level of care
Staffing & Ratios
- Day RN-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (PCU), 1:5 (Med/Surg)
- Night RN-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
- Nursing assistant support available
- Charge nurse present
- Additional unit support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
Required Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Oncology certification preferred but not required (e.g., CHEMO CERT)
- ONS/ONCC certification preferred
- Competency in ventilator care and hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000), ICP monitoring (training provided)
- Experience with titrating drips such as insulin and cardizem
- EMR system: EPIC
- IV pumps: Alaris
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience in PCU and/or Oncology
- Experience required for charge nurse role: minimum 1 year
- First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)
Orientation & Training
- Orientation length: 2 days
- Pass/fail exam during orientation requiring 90% to continue (open book, resources provided)
Work Environment & Policies
- Scrubs: Navy blue
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Self-scheduling available
- Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Driver’s license required to verify distance compliance (must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility)
- Radius rule: Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any affiliated facilities within 50 miles
- Patient experience focus: Hourly rounding and culturally respectful care for diverse populations
Additional Information
- Common drips/medications: Chemotherapy agents, heparin, cardizem, protonix
- Specialty equipment: Lyko lifts and other lift equipment available in patient rooms
- Shift times include various 12-hour blocks (7a-7p, 7p-7a, and partial shifts)
