Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Memphis, Tennessee
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day Shift (4x12 hours, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in a Medical Surgical Orthopedics unit.
  • Work within team nursing ratios (discuss specifics with manager during interview).
  • On-call and weekend work required as needed; weekend block scheduling generally not accommodated.
  • Strict 100-mile radius rule for travel nurses; local candidates not accepted.
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted; prior travel experience required.
  • Must have experience in Orthopedics, Level I Trauma, and large hospital settings.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum of 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with at least one year of recent Med Surg experience.
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience working with Level I Trauma patients.
  • Orthopedics nursing experience.

Certifications & Competencies

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (annual renewal required)
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests must be current (within 1 year).

Experience & Skills

  • Orthopedic nursing experience required.
  • Experience working in a Level I Trauma Center.
  • Experience in large hospital environments.

Background & Screening Requirements

  • Background check within 60 days of start, including statewide, county, federal, and education verification.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and annually thereafter.
  • Sex offender search and Tennessee Adult Abuse Registry search required.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start.
  • Two recent professional references required.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands.
  • Fit test for 3M N-95 masks within 1 year (must pass without limitations).
  • Negative TB test (2-step PPD, Q-Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; if positive, chest X-ray required within 2 years.
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (3-shot series, positive titer, or signed declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 30). Exemptions require mask-wearing in patient areas and may delay start date.

Additional Requirements

  • Photo for badge must meet strict guidelines (passport-style, no hats, no glasses glare, recent within 6 months).
  • Submission of all required documentation (licenses, certifications, background checks, health records) prior to start.
  • No prints or embroidered scrubs allowed; specific scrub colors required for different roles (Navy blue for RNs).
  • Must sign confidentiality acknowledgment prior to start.
  • EPIC questionnaire required for RNs; EPIC experience may allow testing out of training.
  • Onsite fit test and Cerner questionnaire may be required if applicable.

Notes

  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted with application; changes after offer require manager approval.
  • Weekend work and on-call duties are part of the role as needed.
  • Block scheduling for weekends generally not available but may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position is ideal for experienced travel Registered Nurses with orthopedic and trauma experience seeking a fast-paced, acute care environment in a Level I Trauma Center.
