Description

Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 48


Job Description

  • Work primarily in Labor and Delivery with cross-training expected in Mother/Baby unit.
  • May be floated to NICU (feeders/growers).
  • Manage care for both low-risk (including certified nurse midwife population) and high-risk maternal fetal medicine patients.
  • Facility averages approximately 2000 deliveries annually.
  • Unit features 8 private labor rooms, 4 private triage beds, and 2 OB operating rooms.
  • Time off: 40 hours approved; work every other holiday and every other weekend.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience, with experience within the last year
  • Current certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) issued by American Heart Association or American Academy of Pediatrics
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification
  • Education: Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CHEMO, NIH Stroke, CPI, and other certifications may be required or preferred depending on unit assignment; confirm with recruiter if applicable.
  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm testing required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and Mother-Baby unit.
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams required as applicable.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days.
  • Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN minimum if BSN not held. Official transcripts acceptable; photocopies of diplomas are not.
  • Virginia-specific fingerprinting required for certain units (e.g., Behavioral Health).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required only for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East assignments.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet job demands.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (must be received after age 11; no exemptions allowed)
    • 2-step TB test or Qgold within 12 months; chest x-ray if positive.
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted for measles.
    • Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer required; if low/negative, additional antigen titer required.
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but must be documented.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions).
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug test including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually.

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Candidate must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service.
  • Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged.
  • Various facility-specific forms and screenings must be completed prior to start (e.g., TB screening, release authorization, traveler compliance).
  • Fit testing for patient-facing roles will be completed onsite if required.
  • Latex allergy questionnaire required if applicable.

References and Documentation

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required.
  • Completed employment application/resume required.
  • Skills checklist and internal evaluations required if applicable and updated annually.
