Description

Registered Nurse (Intensive Care)

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit and Patient Care Details

  • Unit includes CVICU (12 beds), COVID ICU (8 beds), Medical-Surgical ICU (8 beds), and PCU (16-20 beds with double occupancy). All under the same Critical Care service line.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU 1:1-2 depending on acuity and staffing; PCU 1:3-4.
  • Patient types include COVID (manual proning), low-level neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, PN, ARF, CRRT, rhabdomyolysis, post-MI, detox, chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, post-surgical patients including cardiac surgical cases, Impella, TAVR, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP.
  • Nurses should be able to interpret ABGs and have strong EKG reading skills.
  • Travelers with open heart surgery experience are preferred and should be able to check off relevant skills.

Required Certifications and Skills

  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing.
  • Experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT preferred.
  • Ability to wean and troubleshoot ventilators.
  • Must be able to titrate critical care drips including pressors (e.g., levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), antiarrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, and argatroban.
  • Familiarity with ventilators, Glidescopes for intubation, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, and Vapotherm.
  • Nurses are responsible for monitoring telemetry strips and using Nihon Kohden monitors.

Staffing and Support

  • Intensivists are in-house 24/7.
  • Nurse Practitioners provide supplemental coverage.
  • Respiratory Therapists cover all areas but are not present in ICU 24/7.
  • No Tele/Monitor Techs on the unit; RNs read their own telemetry strips.
  • No nurse aides on the unit.
  • Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort.
  • House supervisor coverage is 24/7 with some exceptions.

Scheduling and Work Requirements

  • Schedule is 7 pm to 7 am, created 4 weeks in advance.
  • Some self-scheduling allowed but subject to manager approval.
  • No block scheduling typically allowed.
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (weekend nights are Friday and Saturday; weekend days are Saturday and Sunday, with some variation).
  • Holiday requirement: 1 holiday and the eve of another holiday per contract; not all holidays require work.
  • Possible on-call once every 6 weeks during low census; no scheduled call.
  • Floating required within float rotation; may float to PCU, MST, or EC ICU/PCU as needed.

Orientation and Dress Code

  • 8 hours of general hospital orientation.
  • Unit orientation includes one 12-hour shift with a preceptor and a second 12-hour shift with a buddy.
  • Additional orientation/checkoff required for special skills such as open heart surgery or CRRT.
  • Scrub color: any professional color except camo; will transition to navy scrubs in October.

Additional Requirements

  • Radius rule: candidates must live more than 50 miles away and may not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any affiliated facility within the past year.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • Must be able to work all areas within the critical care service line.

Note: This position requires strong critical care skills, flexibility to float between units, and the ability to manage complex cardiac and medical-surgical patients in a high-acuity environment.
