Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU/PCU Float

Location: Lufkin, Texas
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Work in a rural hospital setting with an outdated EMR system.
  • Float between 2 units: ICU (24 beds) and PCU (26 beds).
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: typically 2:1, sometimes 3:1 depending on acuity
    • PCU: 4:1
  • Common patient types: cardiac post-CABG or PCI, sepsis, DKA, respiratory failure.
  • Critical care experience required.
  • RNs are required to titrate drips such as Levophed, amiodarone, heparin, precedex, propofol, cardene, nitro, neosynephrine, dopamine, etc.

Staffing & Support

  • No nurse aides in ICU; 1-2 aides per shift in PCU.
  • Intensivist present during the day; hospitalists available 24/7.
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7 with equipment including vents, BiPAP, CPAP, Airvo.
  • Monitor tech on site; bedside monitors and monitor bank at charge desk.

Scheduling & Work Hours

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 12-hour shifts.
  • Expect to work approximately 4 shifts per week.
  • Weekend coverage usually every other weekend; holiday coverage depends on staffing.
  • No call or standby requirement.

Orientation & Dress Code

  • New employee orientation during the first week.
  • Orientation shifts on each ICU and PCU unit.
  • Dress code: navy blue scrubs.

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Current RN license.
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required.
  • Critical care experience required.

Additional Notes

  • Floating between ICU and PCU required, with occasional floating to other departments as needed.
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor roles present on each shift.
