Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit
Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a blended 19-bed Step Down Unit (8 Stepdown beds, 11 Med/Surg/Telemetry beds)
- Night shift: 12-hour shifts from 6:30 PM to 7:00 AM
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week
- Float requirements: First to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float possible but cross-campus mid-shift float is unlikely
- Weekend/Holiday schedule: Three weekends every six weeks; every other holiday
- No on-call or call-back required
- Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires
- Scrub color: Navy blue, no competing health system or agency logos allowed
- COVID-19 vaccine not required (subject to change)
- Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins can result in termination
Patient Population
- Post-procedure cardiac patients (catheterizations, stents, pacemakers, ICDs, ablations)
- STEMI/NSTEMI care
- Carotid endarterectomy
- Sepsis management
- Neurological cases (CVAs, seizures, possible TBI)
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
Required Skills & Responsibilities
- Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation (travelers must pass telemetry tests)
- Post heart catheterization care including femoral/TR band management
- Initiate and titrate drips such as Cardizem, Amiodarone, Cardene, Nitro, Insulin, Heparin
- Perform NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and strong neurological assessments
- Sepsis care and chest tube management
- Peripheral IV insertion
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills required
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years solid Step Down experience plus 1 prior travel contract OR 5 years solid Step Down experience if no travel experience
- Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
- Current active compact Registered Nurse license for Indiana
- Certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, and NIHSS
Staffing Ratios
- Day shift: 1 RN to 5-6 patients
- Night shift: 1 RN to 4 patients (can be up to 1:7)
- Charge nurse will take patients; Step Down RNs also care for Med/Surg/Telemetry patients
Additional Notes
- No local candidates within a 40-mile radius considered
- Bi-weekly orientation starting 4/6
- Guaranteed hours except during holidays when the unit is closed
