Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Job Details
- Work on a progressive care unit focused on cardiovascular patients, including those with congestive heart failure, post-myocardial infarction, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, COPD, congenital heart defects, infective endocarditis, and other co-morbidities.
- Care for patients post-cath lab procedures, prior to LVAD placements, heart/lung transplants, and pre-valve replacement.
- Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients.
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM).
- Floating required: Nurses may be asked to float to Med-Surg, PCU, or ICU units as needed.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required depending on operational needs, with training provided.
- Weekend work: Must be flexible and able to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, including 2 years specifically in a Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
- Cardiac PCU experience within the last year.
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Proficient in managing drips, post-cath lab care, sheath pulls, IV starts, and pre/post cath lab care.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
- Background checks including 7-year work/living history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, and education verification.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required.
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray and documentation required.
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31); declinations not accepted.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
- Color blindness test (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score required.
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment verified within 2 years; must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above.
- Employment application covering last 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually.
Additional Notes
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Indiana RN license holders will not be allowed to work at this facility effective 11/30/2024, except for perioperative/OR and ambulatory RN specialties (not applicable here).
- Travelers must agree to the possibility of precepting and/or having students shadow them.
Summary
This is a 13-week night shift travel RN position in a cardiovascular progressive care unit requiring 2 years of nursing experience with Trauma Level I experience. The role demands flexibility with weekends and floating, strong cardiac and critical care skills, and compliance with extensive health and background documentation. Prior travel experience is not required.
