Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Requirements
- Credential: Active Respiratory Therapist credential in good standing (RRT preferred/required per facility standards)
- Certifications: Current BLS (and ACLS as required by unit/facility policy)
- Clinical Skills: Competency with invasive and non-invasive ventilation, oxygen delivery systems, aerosol/nebulizer therapies, and respiratory equipment troubleshooting
- Work Style: Comfortable working night shift with autonomy while collaborating with physicians, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams
- Documentation: Ability to complete accurate, timely charting and follow respiratory care policies and procedures
Key Responsibilities (Respiratory Therapy)
- Assess patients, evaluate respiratory status, and recommend/implement individualized respiratory care plans within scope and policy
- Administer prescribed therapies including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, humidification, and ventilation support
- Set up, perform safety checks, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators (invasive and non-invasive)
- Provide airway management and secretion clearance interventions, including chest physiotherapy and suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, tracheal)
- Monitor per policy, including pulse oximetry and capnography; communicate changes promptly to the care team
- Support respiratory-related procedures as needed (e.g., bronchoscopy support, tracheostomy care, chest tube-related support)
- Perform arterial punctures per policy and report results appropriately; assist with pulmonary function studies as assigned (e.g., NIF, VC)
- Perform 12-lead EKGs and basic arrhythmia recognition as required
- Respond to emergencies and perform CPR in accordance with BLS/ACLS guidelines
- Complete thorough documentation of treatments, pre/post assessments, patient response, and shift-to-shift handoff communication
- Assist with patient transport into and out of the facility as medically prescribed
- Support equipment readiness by reporting issues and assisting with preventative maintenance workflows as needed
