Job Requirements / Qualifications
- Certification: ASCP MLS or ASCP?BB required (MLT certification not accepted for MLS positions)
- Experience: Minimum 2 years as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital clinical laboratory, with hands?on blood bank / transfusion services experience
- Blood Bank Skills: Proficiency in ABO/Rh typing, antibody screen & identification, AHG crossmatch, antibody typing (tube method), antigen typing, blood irradiation, cord blood evaluation
- Licensure: DC laboratory license in hand required at time of submission
- Travel: Travel assignment experience required
- Health: Flu vaccine required (no exemptions)
- References: Two (2) supervisor references required
Responsibilities
- Perform blood bank and transfusion services procedures including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening and identification, AHG crossmatch, antigen typing, blood irradiation, and cord blood evaluation
- Conduct antibody typing using tube methods and antigen typing with attention to immunohematology best practices
- Ensure accurate positive patient identification, specimen handling, and documentation across all laboratory processes
- Prepare, thaw, cool, and issue blood products per hospital and transfusion service protocols
- Perform transfusion reaction workups and Rhogam screening; escalate findings to clinical teams as required
- Maintain compliance with hospital, CAP and AABB policies and laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams (nursing, physicians, clinical staff) to support safe transfusion practices and quality patient care
Preferred Skills (not required)
- Experience with blood bank instrumentation and immunohematology platforms, laboratory information systems (LIS), and quality control processes
- Familiarity with hospital transfusion service workflow in a high?volume clinical lab
