Operating Room Job Details

  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,730–$1,860
  • Assignment: 13-week contract
  • Start Date: October 19, 2026
  • End Date: January 18, 2027
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, averaging 36 hours
  • Shift Duration: 12-hour day shifts
  • Shift Hours: Approximately 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with variable days off
  • Healthcare Setting: Inpatient operating room
  • Call: To be discussed during the secondary interview

Surgical First Assistant Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year of healthcare experience; operating room, surgical assisting, or surgical technologist experience strongly preferred
  • Completion of an approved Surgical Assistant program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential through an approved certifying organization
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with robotic, orthopedic, and neurological surgical procedures
  • Strong knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, patient positioning, and perioperative operating room protocols
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and ability to remain calm in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, assist with patient movement, and safely handle surgical equipment and supplies

Operating Room Technician Responsibilities

  • Serve as a first or second assistant during assigned surgical procedures under the direction of the surgeon
  • Perform surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and maintenance of the sterile field
  • Prepare operating rooms using surgeon preference lists and ensure instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and functioning properly
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, Foley catheterization, draping, and other preoperative activities
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by providing appropriate instruments, supplies, retractors, suction, sponges, and cautery support
  • Assist with sponge, sharps, and instrument counts and promptly communicate any discrepancy or sterility concern
  • Handle specimens, implants, drains, catheters, and packing according to established procedures
  • Under direct surgeon observation, assist with trocar placement, power equipment, stapling devices, local anesthetic infiltration, and other permitted surgical tasks
  • Support wound closure, including assistance with fascia, subcutaneous tissue, skin suturing, skin stapling, and application of dressings
  • Participate in Universal Protocol procedures, infection prevention practices, room turnover, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Protect patient confidentiality and communicate pertinent information clearly to the surgical team
  • Provide age-appropriate care and maintain a professional, compassionate approach with patients and families
  • Take call as assigned and support department needs during periods of fluctuating workload
