Respiratory Therapist Job Details

RRT Job Requirements

• At least 1 year of recent respiratory therapy experience in a hospital or comparable acute-care setting
• Current respiratory therapist license or professional credential, with eligibility to practice in New Jersey
• Strong knowledge of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, oxygen delivery systems, and aerosol therapy
• Proficiency with airway management, suctioning, tracheostomy care, arterial punctures, and comprehensive respiratory assessments
• Ability to perform or assist with emergency airway procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Current BLS certification; ACLS certification or demonstrated ACLS competency preferred
• Strong communication, clinical documentation, patient assessment, and clinical decision-making skills

Respiratory Care Responsibilities

• Provide safe, effective respiratory care and evaluate patients to recommend appropriate treatment plans
• Administer prescribed oxygen, aerosol, nebulizer, humidification, and mechanical ventilation therapies
• Operate, monitor, set up, and perform required self-testing for a variety of mechanical ventilators
• Perform suctioning, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, capnography, pulmonary function testing, and 12-lead EKGs
• Provide tracheostomy care, including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes according to policy
• Perform arterial punctures and monitor, document, and communicate test results
• Assist with bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, chest tube placement, and other respiratory procedures
• Perform endotracheal intubation and extubation using approved techniques and equipment
• Support emergency response and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with BLS and ACLS guidelines
• Educate patients and families about treatments, equipment, and respiratory care needs before discharge
• Document assessments, treatments, patient responses, charges, and shift-to-shift handoff information accurately
• Communicate effectively with physicians and the interdisciplinary care team regarding patient progress and therapy effectiveness
