Under the guidance of the Market Education Director, the Clinical Educator Coordinator provides market-wide coordination and oversight of the DMC Nurse Extern Program and clinical student/academic partnership programs across the Detroit Medical Center.
The Clinical Educator Coordinator serves as the primary Nursing Education resource for Nurse Extern I and Nurse Extern II employees across the DMC health system, coordinating their onboarding, orientation, education, competency development, clinical progression, records, and ongoing professional development. The Coordinator collaborates with nursing leadership, facility educators, managers, preceptors, Human Resources, and other stakeholders to provide a consistent Nurse Extern experience across the DMC market and support successful transition into Graduate Nurse and Registered Nurse roles.
The Clinical Educator Coordinator also serves as the market-wide Nursing Education liaison for clinical students, clinical faculty, universities, colleges, nursing schools, and other academic institutions completing clinical experiences throughout DMC. The Coordinator facilitates clinical placements, student and faculty onboarding, required documentation, orientation, compliance requirements, placement tracking, and communication between academic partners and DMC facilities.
The Clinical Educator Coordinator develops and maintains collaborative relationships with academic institutions and works with DMC nursing leadership and facility educators to evaluate clinical placement capacity, support high-quality clinical learning experiences, and strengthen the pipeline from clinical student to Nurse Extern to Graduate Nurse/Registered Nurse employment within DMC.
In addition to Nurse Extern and clinical student responsibilities, the Clinical Educator Coordinator supports market-wide nursing education initiatives, continuing education, orientation, competency development, professional development, Nurse Residency, preceptor development, and other educational programs as assigned.
Major Responsibilities
Nurse Extern Program
• Coordinates the DMC Nurse Extern Program across the market, including Nurse Extern I and Nurse Extern II employees.
• Maintains accurate market-wide records of Nurse Extern employees, including facility, department, academic program, anticipated graduation date, orientation status, education requirements, and program progression.
• Coordinates Nurse Extern onboarding, orientation, educational programming, competency requirements, and ongoing professional development.
• Serves as a primary Nursing Education resource for Nurse Externs, providing guidance, mentorship, education, and support throughout their participation in the program.
• Collaborates with facility educators, nursing leadership, managers, preceptors, Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, and other stakeholders to promote a standardized Nurse Extern experience across DMC.
• Provides leadership, education, and resources to Nurse Extern preceptors and supports effective preceptor/extern relationships.
• Monitors Nurse Extern progression and collaborates with facility leadership to identify and address educational or developmental needs.
• Supports Nurse Extern transition and retention strategies, including progression from Nurse Extern to Graduate Nurse and Registered Nurse roles within DMC.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of the Nurse Extern Program and identifies opportunities for program improvement, standardization, growth, and increased retention.
Clinical Students & Academic Partnerships
• Serves as the market-wide Nursing Education liaison for clinical students, clinical faculty, universities, colleges, nursing schools, and other academic partners.
• Coordinates clinical student placements across DMC hospitals in collaboration with academic institutions, facility nursing leadership, educators, managers, and clinical faculty.
• Coordinates processes for student and clinical faculty onboarding, placement requests, rosters, required documentation, orientation, compliance requirements, and clearance prior to beginning clinical experiences.
• Maintains accurate market-wide records of clinical student placements, including academic institution, program, facility, unit/department, clinical dates, faculty/preceptor information, and placement status.
• Collaborates with facility nursing leadership and educators to evaluate clinical placement capacity and identify appropriate learning opportunities while supporting patient safety and operational needs.
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with universities, colleges, nursing schools, and other academic programs.
• Serves as a primary point of contact for academic institutions regarding clinical placements, onboarding requirements, educational expectations, scheduling, and other clinical education matters.
• Coordinates communication regarding placement requests, approvals, changes, cancellations, compliance concerns, and other clinical education needs.
• Supports standardized student and clinical faculty orientation and onboarding processes throughout the DMC market.
• Ensures clinical student processes meet applicable DMC, Tenet Healthcare, Department of Nursing, regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
• Identifies opportunities to strengthen academic partnerships and expand the pipeline from clinical student experiences into Nurse Extern, Graduate Nurse, Nurse Residency, and Registered Nurse opportunities within DMC.
Clinical Education & Professional Development
• Supports market-wide educational needs, including classroom education, clinical experiences, learning technologies, competency development, orientation, and professional development.
• Implements Tenet comprehensive education programs to meet orientation, ongoing competency, and professional development needs.
• Coordinates and supports continuing education activities and participates in the DMC continuing education provider unit as assigned.
• Evaluates nursing education activities that qualify for continuing education credit and assists with maintaining applicable documentation and requirements.
• Supports Nurse Residency programming and collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to ensure eligible new graduate nurses are enrolled in required programs.
• Coordinates with appropriate stakeholders regarding learning management system requirements and specialty-specific educational assignments.
• Supports preceptor development and educational programs designed to strengthen clinical teaching and mentorship.
• Assists with development and revision of clinical education policies, procedures, standards, and processes as requested.
• Provides guidance, resources, knowledge, coaching, and mentorship to nurses, students, Nurse Externs, preceptors, and colleagues.
• Participates in quality and performance improvement activities.
• Participates in market-wide councils, committees, and workgroups related to Nursing Education, Nurse Externs, clinical students, academic partnerships, workforce development, and professional practice.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Market-Wide Services

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Nursing Education or related specialty, Masters Degree in Nursing preferred
2. 3 year nursing experience in an acute care setting specialty preferred
