Description

Operating Room Nurse

Assignment Duration

This is a 13-week contract position.

Schedule

8-hour shifts; 0615-1445, Monday through Friday; no weekends, holidays, or call.

Job Description

The Operating Room Nurse assesses and responds to the individual physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient through personal observation and interaction, while acting as a patient advocate. The nurse sets up the operating room with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment according to the assignments and schedule, working collaboratively with the scrub nurse/technician, anesthesia personnel, and surgeon to provide a safe and efficient environment of care.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies the patient and operative site according to policy and transports the patient safely.
  • Communicates information accurately to the surgical team and documents it in a timely manner.
  • Constantly observes the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Charts required information on the patient record, checks consent and history & physical (H&P) for each surgical procedure, and performs the proper "time out".
  • Oversees sponge, needle, and instrument counts before surgery and reports results to the surgeon.
  • Has appropriate medications available for each case, ensuring proper labeling and usage on the sterile field.
  • Handles specimens correctly and safely, labeling and recording information according to policy.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed and ensures all team members are similarly protected.
  • Maintains communication among all areas when functioning as a float nurse/resource, relieving personnel for breaks and lunches, and assisting with patient flow according to the OR schedule.
  • Reviews surgeon's preference cards periodically to ensure the availability of specific supplies and equipment.
  • Independently gains knowledge of all equipment, procedures, supplies, and drugs, including their storage locations.
  • Familiar with anesthesia supplies and emergency carts and their contents.
  • Utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner while ensuring quality patient care and participates in annual inventory counts.
  • Assists with housekeeping duties as necessary, including making beds and disposing of trash.
  • Performs additional duties as required in accordance with policies and functions with appropriate skill levels in all patient areas.
