Description

UNIT: Med‑Surg / Tele Float Pool

Position Description

The Med‑Surg Float Pool RN provides comprehensive patient care across multiple Medical‑Surgical and Telemetry units, adapting quickly to varying patient populations and unit workflows. Nurses are expected to function independently, demonstrate strong clinical judgment, and comply with all Temple policies, documentation standards, and safety protocols.

Float Coverage

  • All inpatient Medical‑Surgical units across:
    • Temple University Hospital (Main Campus)
    • Temple Women & Families Campus
  • Stepdown units and ED (for Med‑Surg holds)
  • Total coverage includes 9 Med‑Surg units and 5 Stepdown units
  • Orientation:
    • Initial orientation at Main Campus on start date
    • Additional 2–3 hour orientation at Women & Families, scheduled later and communicated upon arrival

Scheduling Requirements

  • Every other weekend required
  • Agency staff are not scheduled on holidays

Clinical & Experience Requirements

  • Ratios: Typically 1:4 (may vary based on unit acuity)
  • Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • EPIC experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable floating between:
    • Med‑Surg units
    • Tele units
    • Stepdown units
    • Main Campus and Women & Families Campus
  • Must comply with all Temple attendance, documentation, and medication safety policies

Required Clinical Competencies

  • Airway/Respiratory: Breathing treatments, CPAP/BiPAP, trach care, chest tubes
  • Cardiac: Telemetry interpretation, EKGs, cardioversion/defibrillation
  • Line Management: PICCs, central lines, ports, triple lumens, wound vacs, drains
  • IV Medications: Heparin (titrated), amiodarone, antiarrhythmics
  • Behavioral Health: Chemical dependency, involuntary status, restraints, medical psych, eating disorders
