Facility: Roper Hospital
Location: 316 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Start Date: January 26, 2026
End Date: Apr 18, 2026

Hours: 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week

Weekends: Every other weekend required
Job Summary
The Medical Technologist II performs routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory procedures requiring technical expertise, independent judgment, and decision-making. The role follows established laboratory standards, policies, and procedures to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable test results. The position also includes phlebotomy and accessioning duties as needed and supports laboratory supervisory functions.
Strict confidentiality must be maintained at all times. The role requires frequent interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Procedures

Perform routine and specialized testing, quality control, and proficiency testing

Verify specimen integrity and prioritize testing appropriately
-
Evaluate and interpret results; take corrective action per policy

Assist with implementation of new testing methods
-
Maintain documentation, procedure manuals, and support CAP inspections
-
Utilize laboratory resources efficiently to minimize waste
2. Instrumentation
-
Operate laboratory instruments accurately and efficiently
-
Perform and document instrument QC and preventive maintenance
-
Troubleshoot instrument issues and understand operational theory
-
Escalate issues appropriately when assistance is needed
3. Information Handling
-
Use Cerner/STAR LIS for test ordering, receiving, canceling, and result verification
-
Monitor pending tests and ensure timely follow-up
-
Maintain accurate documentation of QC, PMs, and corrective actions
-
Adhere to patient confidentiality policies
4. Communication & Customer Service
-
Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, pathologists, peers, and clinical staff
-
Respond to laboratory phone calls and inquiries
-
Collaborate effectively across departments and shifts
-
Maintain positive working relationships with hospital staff
5. Compliance & Safety
-
Follow laboratory and hospital safety policies and procedures
-
Maintain a safe work environment

Comply with regulatory, billing, and medical necessity requirements

Complete mandatory education and participate in continuing education
-
Support department performance improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Experience
-
Generalist experience including Blood Bank (multiple years preferred)
-
Cerner LIS experience required
-
Roche Chemistry analyzer experience required
-
Sysmex Hematology experience required
-
Strong critical-thinking and decision-making skills
-
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

Excellent communication and organizational skills

Phlebotomy experience required
Education & Certification
-
ASCP, NCA, or AMT certification (MT/MLS/MLT) – Required
-
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science with required clinical training – Required
