Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ER RN is responsible for rapid assessment, prioritization, and implementation of care for patients with emergent, urgent, and non-urgent conditions, while collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
Key Responsibilities

Perform rapid triage and patient assessment using evidence-based protocols.

Provide direct nursing care to patients with medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, neurological, and behavioral emergencies.

Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and emergency interventions per physician orders and hospital policy.

Monitor patient condition, interpret vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and lab results, and respond appropriately to changes in status.

Assist with emergency procedures including intubation, conscious sedation, wound care, splinting, and trauma response.

Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to prioritize care in high-volume situations.

Document all patient care accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with Penn Medicine policies.

Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

Provide patient and family education, discharge instructions, and emotional support.

Maintain compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and Penn Medicine quality and safety standards.

Participate in continuous quality improvement, education, and professional development activities.
Required Qualifications

Active Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license (or eligible for PA licensure).

BSN required or in progress (per Penn Medicine standards).

2 year of Emergency Department or acute care experience (new grad residency may be considered).

BLS and ACLS certification (American Heart Association).

Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.

Strong communication, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills.
