Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ER RN is responsible for rapid assessment, prioritization, and implementation of care for patients with emergent, urgent, and non-urgent conditions, while collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform rapid triage and patient assessment using evidence-based protocols.

• Provide direct nursing care to patients with medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, neurological, and behavioral emergencies.

• Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and emergency interventions per physician orders and hospital policy.

• Monitor patient condition, interpret vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and lab results, and respond appropriately to changes in status.

• Assist with emergency procedures including intubation, conscious sedation, wound care, splinting, and trauma response.

• Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to prioritize care in high-volume situations.

• Document all patient care accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with Penn Medicine policies.

• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

• Provide patient and family education, discharge instructions, and emotional support.

• Maintain compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and Penn Medicine quality and safety standards.

• Participate in continuous quality improvement, education, and professional development activities.

Required Qualifications

• Active Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license (or eligible for PA licensure).

• BSN required or in progress (per Penn Medicine standards).

• 2 year of Emergency Department or acute care experience (new grad residency may be considered).

• BLS and ACLS certification (American Heart Association).

• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.

• Strong communication, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills.
