Scrub Technician / OR Technician

Short Description:

• BLS certification (through AHA or RQI specifically) required OR OR Tech certification required.

Position Summary:

The Scrub Technician participates as a key member of the surgical team, assisting in the planning and implementation of nursing care for each patient. This role requires working collaboratively with medical, nursing, and ancillary staff to ensure safe patient care. The Scrub Technician demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and a courteous manner while handling confidential patient information.

Key Responsibilities:

• Sterile Instrument Handling:

  • Clean instruments and ensure sterility using proper procedures.

  • Recognize successful completion of steam autoclave and automated high-level disinfectant processes.

• Surgical Setup:

  • Select equipment and supplies efficiently based on the surgical procedure.

  • Prepare instrument sets according to preference lists, patient history, and age.

  • Utilize supplies cost-effectively and handle sophisticated equipment safely.

• Aseptic Technique & Sterile Field Maintenance:

  • Create and maintain sterile fields in accordance with AORN standards.

  • Perform proper surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.

  • Assist with patient draping and receive sterile supplies from the circulator.

  • Initiate corrective measures if sterile technique is compromised.

• Patient Care Support:

  • Work with medical and nursing staff to ensure safe patient care.

  • Handle sharps safely to prevent injury or contamination.

  • Follow policies for surgical counts and address discrepancies immediately.

  • Accurately prepare and label medications and solutions.

  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor to new employees.

• Environmental Safety & Compliance:

  • Assess surgical environment for safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.

  • Support continual service readiness.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Experience & Expertise:

• Minimum of 1 year experience as a Scrub Technician or OR Tech.

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in surgical procedures.

• Competence in preparing, maintaining, and handling surgical instruments and sterile fields.
