JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Respiratory Therapist II
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Northside Hospital Respiratory Care
Reports To: Respiratory Care Clinical Supervisor Occupational Summary
Provides comprehensive respiratory care to patients across the lifespan, including adult, neonatal, and outpatient populations (e.g., CPAP centers).
Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the scope of practice and in accordance with national standards. May include ECG, EEG, pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy support, and other advanced respiratory diagnostics. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assesses patient respiratory status using clinical data, including vital signs, chest X-rays, and arterial blood gas (ABG) values.
  • Sets up, manages, and monitors mechanical ventilation; performs airway management and tracheal suctioning.
  • Performs arterial punctures and obtains arterial blood samples from arterial lines; analyzes blood gases.
  • Performs non-invasive oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring.
  • Participates in high-risk deliveries as a member of the Neonatal Resuscitation Team (as applicable).
  • Performs endotracheal intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required.
  • May perform pulmonary function testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing after competency validation.
  • May perform surfactant replacement therapy and assess newborn respiratory status (NICU).
  • Assists physicians with bronchoscopies, EBUS, navigation, and CRYO procedures upon completion of required competencies.
  • May perform EEGs upon completion of competency.
  • Performs diagnostic cardiac testing, including EKGs, rhythm strips, and Holter monitoring.
  • Performs charge and preceptor responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintains equipment and adheres to all safety protocols; promptly reports equipment issues or safety concerns.
CPAP Department (If Applicable)
  • Educates patients on CPAP therapy, including proper use and equipment management.
  • Conducts follow-up with patients during the first month of therapy.
  • Monitors patient compliance with CPAP therapy.
  • Assists with patient equipment resupply.
Professional Development and Leadership
  • Participates in professional development and leadership activities as assigned.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program (Associate's degree or equivalent).
  • Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), or registry-eligible if a new graduate.
  • New graduates must obtain RRT credential within six (6) months of hire to maintain employment.
  • Therapists with greater than five (5) years of experience holding a CRT/CRTT may qualify under a grandfather clause (no registry required).
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (NRP required for NICU/delivery coverage).
  • Valid State of Georgia Respiratory Care license.
  • Demonstrated competency in arterial blood sampling techniques.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience with non-invasive pressure devices (CPAP roles only).
Language Skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, patients, and the public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Report writing is not required for this role.
Mathematical Skills
  • Basic mathematical proficiency.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to interpret written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems in environments with limited standardization.

  • Credentialed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) through the NBRC.
  • Must hold RRT and Georgia licensure for CPAP-specific roles.

Reports To: Respiratory Care Clinical Supervisor (or CPAP Program Coordinator, if applicable)
Supervises: None specified Working Conditions
