Description
Respiratory Therapist (Registered) Pediatric Specialty Omaha, NE
The Respiratory Therapist (Registered) will provide quality patient care by delivering intensive respiratory therapy and assisting with patient transport into and out of the facility as medically prescribed, within the scope of professional license and with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, recommending treatment plans, performing physician-prescribed therapies, and operating ventilatory and oxygenation equipment. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Schedule: Nights shift, 12 hours per shift, with a minimum of 36 hours per week.
- Required Qualifications:
- License: Must be licensed/credentialed as a Respiratory Therapist (Registered) (license required on the first day)
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Preferred Qualifications: None listed.
- Additional Information:
- Evaluates patients and recommends treatment plans.
- Explains the purpose of treatments, tests, and equipment and provides necessary education upon discharge.
- Performs routine physician-prescribed respiratory treatments, including use of ventilatory equipment (invasive and non-invasive), oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizer devices.
- Performs chest physiotherapy to promote secretion clearance and performs suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal).
- Performs oximetry and capnography monitoring according to policy and reviews chest X-rays to determine need for further evaluation.
- Performs 12-Lead Electrocardiogram (EKG) and recognizes basic arrhythmias.
- Conducts pulmonary function studies according to policy (e.g., Negative Inspiratory Force (NIF), Vital Capacity (VC)).
- Assists with respiratory care procedures according to policy (e.g., bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomies, chest tube placement).
- Performs tracheostomy care according to policy, including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes (emergent and non-emergent).
- Performs arterial puncture according to policy and monitors, records, and reports test results.
- For hospitals with moderate complexity labs: follows policies for laboratory testing, including specimen handling, equipment use, documentation and reporting, quality controls, and maintenance across pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases.
- Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) guidelines.
- Inserts and removes endotracheal tubes via freehand technique and/or video laryngoscope system.
- Sets up, conducts self-tests on, and operates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilation on various types of equipment; assists with preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Documents treatments and patient responses on respiratory care records and patient chart (including pre- and post-assessments per policy).
- Communicates with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding therapy effectiveness; provides shift-to-shift handoff communication during walking rounds.
- Maintains accurate respiratory therapy charging through data entry, verification, and correction of errors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
