Job Summary
Respiratory Therapist (Registered) RT PEDS (Pediatric) | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Respiratory Therapist provides quality patient care by delivering intensive respiratory therapy and medically prescribed patient transport into and out of the facility, within the scope of professional licensure and with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, recommending treatment plans, operating ventilatory and oxygenation equipment, performing suctioning and monitoring, assisting with respiratory procedures, and providing patient education upon discharge to home. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.

• Schedule: Nights shift with 12 hours per shift; minimum 36 hours per week.

• Additional Information:
  • Performs physician-prescribed routine respiratory care, including use of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment and oxygen/aerosol devices.
  • Provides chest physiotherapy to support secretion clearance and performs suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal).
  • Performs oximetry and capnography monitoring according to policy and reviews chest x-rays to determine need for further evaluation.
  • Performs pulmonary function studies according to policy (e.g., NIF, VC).
  • Assists with respiratory care-related procedures per policy (e.g., bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy procedures, chest tube placement).
  • Performs tracheostomy care per policy, including insertion/removal of tracheostomy tubes (emergent and non-emergent).
  • Performs arterial puncture per policy and supports ventilation assessment, including monitoring, recording, and reporting results.
  • For facilities with moderate complexity labs, follows policies related to laboratory testing, including specimen handling, equipment use, documentation/reporting, quality controls, and maintenance across pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) guidelines.
  • Inserts and removes endotracheal tubes using free-hand technique and/or a video laryngoscope system.
  • Sets up, performs self-test on ventilatory equipment as required, and operates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilation.
  • Assists in facilitating preventive maintenance and repair of equipment as needed.
  • Documents treatment details and patient response in respiratory care records and the patient chart, including pre- and post-assessments per policy.
  • Communicates with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding the efficiency of therapy and provides shift-to-shift hands-off communication during walking rounds.
  • Maintains accurate respiratory therapy charging through data entry, verification, and correction of errors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
