Unit Information

• Number of Beds: 16 with 8 hall chairs
• Staffing: 6-7 staff per shift
• Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 1 triage nurse, 4-5 nurses (one mid-shift), 1 ultrasound technician, 1-2 techs
• Night Shift: 1 charge nurse, 1 triage nurse, 4-5 nurses (one mid-shift), 1 ultrasound technician (7 pm - midnight), 1 tech
• Patient Ratios: 1:4, primarily low acuity (ESI 4 & 5), with potential for 6
• Equipment: Cardiac monitors, Baxter IV pumps, HP monitors, Tonopen, and more
• EMR: Meditech, with vital signs flowing into charts

General Information

This unit specializes in providing emergency care with a focus on compassion, urgency, and teamwork. Nurses are expected to have experience in trauma care as the facility transitions from a Level IV to a Level II trauma center.

Qualifications

Must Have:

• Compassionate care approach
• Experience in emergency department settings (Level II or Level III trauma experience)
• Certifications: TNCC, ENPC or PALS, ACLS, BLS

Preferred:

• CEN or TCRN certifications
• Greater than two years of emergency department experience

Typical Procedures

• Patient assessments
• Documentation and medication administration
• Wound care and splinting
• IV insertions and urine collection
• Laboratory draws
• Caring for patients ranging from ESI 5 to 1

Dress Code

Scrub color: Royal Blue preferred. Team spirit is encouraged with seasonal attire like team jerseys (e.g., Astros, Cowboys).

Unit Guidelines/Policies

Shift huddles at 7 am and 7 pm are mandatory for all staff unless critical care is being provided at the time. EMTALA training is also mandatory.
