Position Overview
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing a range of services in the operating room, particularly within the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR). This role includes the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field, assisting with procedures, and ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout surgical processes.
Required Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in CVOR
- Experience in Level I or II trauma settings is preferred
- First-time travelers are accepted, provided they live more than 100 miles from the facility
Patient Types
- Cardiac surgeries (CABG, TAVR, Valve replacements)
- Thoracic surgeries (lobectomy, hernia repair)
- Generator exchanges
- Lead extractions
- Fem-pop bypass and other open vascular cases
- Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) repairs and carotid procedures
Patient Ratios
Operating Room: 1:1
Qualifications
- BLS certification required
- Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program is required
- CST certification is preferred
Education
Associate Degree in a Healthcare-related field or CST certification is required.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CVOR with experience in the following:
- CABG
- TAVR
- Valve replacements
- Robotic thoracic cases (lobectomy, hernia repair)
- Cardiac organ procurement/harvesting
- Fem-pop bypass and other open vascular cases
Support on the Unit
- Comprehensive surgical team including Surgery RNs, First Assist, and Surgical Technologists
- 2-tech model in each case for support and assistance
- Routine floating through various roles within the surgical team
Charting System/Equipment
- EPIC
- Omnicell
- Alaris
Orientation and Scheduling
- Orientation consists of 5 days (8 hours each)
- Shifts: 8 or 10-hour shifts to be determined during the interview
- Weekend rotation includes being on call one overnight per week and every 3rd weekend
Holiday Expectations
Potential to work on holidays is expected.
