Position Purpose
The Certified Respiratory Therapist is responsible for administering safe and competent respiratory care as ordered by the physician, with an emphasis on specialty areas including Emergency, Neonatal, Pediatric, Geriatric, and Critical Care. This role includes monitoring mechanical ventilation, administering medications, conducting patient assessments, and understanding hemodynamic monitoring and blood work results.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
Position-Specific Performance Expectations
- Competently deliver all Respiratory Care procedures as outlined in the department's policy and procedure manual.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all Respiratory Care procedures following departmental policies.
- Verify respiratory care physician orders and ensure comprehensive communication during report exchanges.
- Engage in department in-services, meetings, patient care rounds, and mandatory hospital meetings.
- Keep the supervisor informed of workload changes and patient acuity.
- Enter all daily services and charges into the department's computer system accurately.
- Demonstrate excellent knowledge of Respiratory Care instruments and equipment, performing troubleshooting as needed.
- Perform effective airway management, assist in intubation as needed, and demonstrate safe suction techniques.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new employees and students.
- Conduct arterial blood gas draws and monitor ventilator patients.
- Complete required continuous education and training, complying with established personal protective equipment requirements.
- Perform patient charge reconciliation and verify accuracy for payroll preparation.
- Exhibit knowledge of all cardiopulmonary equipment within training for CRT.
- Translate medications into appropriate neonatal and pediatric doses considering patient size and needs.
- Assess geriatric patients and address special needs based on patient age and condition.
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patient respiratory status and document therapeutic interventions.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

- Complete all annual education, training, in-service, and certification requirements.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Report to work punctually and complete assigned tasks within designated timeframes.
- Actively participate in departmental and organizational quality improvement initiatives.
- Uphold regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with departmental, state, and federal policies.
- Follow policies for infection control, safety, and risk management to create a safe environment.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age (21 for driving positions with a valid driver’s license).
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- A graduate of a COARC approved Respiratory Care Program with the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential.
- BLS certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
- NRP certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
- At least one year of respiratory experience in a hospital setting; pulmonary diagnostics experience preferred.
- Experience with cardiac diagnostics (EKG, Holter monitor, Event Monitor, Cardiac Stress Testing) is preferred.
