Registered Nurse - Inpatient Med/Surg

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves directing and coordinating nursing care for patients in accordance with nursing practice standards. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals is essential to provide quality, cost-effective, and efficient care to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The nurse serves as a resource person when necessary and applies age-specific considerations and cultural diversity in patient care. This position supports the organization's mission and is responsible for caring for patients from birth to elderly, including post-surgical and behavioral health patients. The nurse is tasked with conducting initial assessments and re-assessments every 24 hours.

Position Qualifications

• Minimum Education: Completion of a nursing program from an NLN approved institution.
• Minimum Experience: 3 years preferred; new graduates are accepted.
• Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must hold a valid license in good standing as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Alaska. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. The selected candidate will need to pass and maintain competencies for this position.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is also required.

• Medical equipment appropriate for the position

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to practice nursing as per Alaska regulations for Registered Nursing.
• Cognitive and technical knowledge to manage care across the continuum.
• Flexibility in the work schedule and ability to make independent decisions within defined limits.
• Ability to utilize the nursing process for patient care provision, including administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, and providing patient/family education.
• Experience managing behavioral health patients and utilizing therapeutic communication techniques.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Ability to work effectively in a patient care setting.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Proficient in documenting actions involved in care delivery and presenting information effectively to groups. Capable of following established guidelines and procedures.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations in various units of measure. Skills include computing rate, ratio, and percentage, drawing and interpreting graphs, and inputting computer information proficiently.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables. Skilled in interpreting various forms of instructions, whether written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse may provide oversight to unit secretaries and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) in collaboration with the Charge Nurse.

Additional Requirements

Holiday coverage will be required. Candidates with experience in both pediatrics and adult nursing are specifically sought for this position.
