Job Description
The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct patient care, coordinates treatment plans, and ensures high-quality nursing services for patients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. This role necessitates strong clinical judgment, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and a commitment to patient-centered care. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice and demonstrating critical thinking skills in all phases of the nursing process. The RN will serve as a professional role model by acting as a caregiver, mentor, teacher, and resource for peers and other healthcare providers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and measuring health outcomes against patient care goals.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in accordance with hospital policies.
- Make nursing decisions within the scope of licensure.
- Administer medications, treatments, and IV therapy as prescribed by a physician.
- Monitor vital signs, symptoms, and patient progress, promptly reporting any changes.
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and health management.
- Maintain accurate documentation in electronic health records (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
- Document patient progress, assessments, and adjust care plans as needed.
- Assist with post-operative recovery, chronic illness management, and acute care interventions.
- Respond to emergencies and coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse age groups, ethnicities, educational backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize effectively.
- Attend nursing staff meetings and in-service education for professional growth and development.
- Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their families.
- Promote patient independence by setting care goals and teaching patients, their families, and friends about conditions, medications, and self-care skills.
- Document patient care services accurately in patient and department records.
- Maintain continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Delegate and oversee tasks assigned to nursing assistants, ESTs, and Unit Clerks.
Other Requirements
- Able to work weekends, holidays, and shift rotations as needed.
- Maintain good physical, emotional, and mental health.
- Actively participate in orienting and mentoring new staff.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved School of Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Prior Medical-Surgical experience preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License in the state of Idaho or an approved compact state licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire.
- Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification required upon hiring.
- Pediatric Life Support (PALS) certification required within a year of hire.
Shift Information
Night Shift; 36 Hours/Week; 5pm - 5:30 am. Holiday coverage required.
